The cost of building Nottinghamshire County Council's new HQ has shot up by £888,000
Nottinghamshire County Council is set to spend £2.5 million demolishing the part of its current headquarters described by its previous boss as a 'concrete monstrosity'. The Conservative-run council is set to move out of its historic County Hall home in West Bridgford as construction continues on a new HQ in Hucknall.
Yet the council says moving out of the aging County Hall will save millions over the coming years. County Hall itself was completed in 1954 and the 1960s and 70s saw the construction of three concrete buildings on the campus. One of those buildings was already demolished some years ago to extend a staff car park. Two of the concrete buildings remain, but the largest one adjoining County Hall is now set to go.
Other items of spending include a £500,000 refurbishment of Trent Bridge House in West Bridgford, where county council employees not relocating to Hucknall will be based. It is not yet known what will happen to County Hall after the council moves out, with restaurants and a hotel having been among several ideas suggested.
Sam Smith, the county council's leader, said: "We are an ambitious council and this additional investment is all part of our wider plan to prioritise delivering services rather than just running expensive buildings.
