Belfast City Council under pressure to reverse decision on project funded with Stormont money
Senior officials at City Hall are under pressure to reverse a pitch upgrade decision that left a North Belfast football team feeling “betrayed”.
The news lead to an angry Facebook post from the Swifts and has been followed by a number of meetings involving local councilors and an MLA and senior leaders at Belfast City Council. “Our teams are at Ballysillan all week long training. You’re talking hundreds of active members who use this facility and who believed we were, after years of asking, finally getting an upgrade. Now we’ve been told we can have two one hour training sessions a week at the new pitch and a match every other week.”
On Friday, a delegation of North Belfast DUP MLA Brian Kingston and DUP councillors Jordan Doran and Fred Cobain met with Belfast City Council CEO John Walsh. Jordan Doran added: “The Ballysillan Playing Fields featured prominently during the Urban Villages North Belfast Framework and Ballysillan Masterplan, with Ballysillan Swifts FC as a key stakeholder.
At least part of the upset at the turn of events has been driven by the fact the funding for the pitch upgrade, and the wider project, was from Stormont and was an area specific plan which involved years of consultations and community input.
