Their payrise has been dubbed 'shameful'

Blackpool councillors are to get a pay rise after a four per cent increase in their allowances was voted through by the controlling Labour group.

. A report by the Independent Remuneration Committee had recommended the 4.04 per cent rise be applied to the basic allowance of £10,663 per year which all councillors receive, as well as to some special responsibility allowances.Coun Tony Williams, leader of the Conservative group, told the meeting it was wrong for councillors to take a pay rise when many of the town’s residents were struggling to pay their bills, which in April will include a five per cent increase in council tax.

“The most important part is inclusivity and the ability of this chamber to be representative of our community and not just those who are financially comfortable.” The meeting was told the commitment of being a councillor often came with financial sacrifices.
