Councils offer cash to encourage people to continue hosting Ukrainians, amid homelessness fear ➡️ The initial six-month hosting period is coming to an end for many households

Both the Local Government Association and the Refugee Council have called on the Government to boost payments to host to help avert this.

“As we approach the end of the initial six-month hosting period under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, we are also worried that yet more people could be at risk of falling into homelessness if they are unable to extend their hosting arrangements,” he said. “The Government must urgently review all schemes to ensure they are fit for purpose, including improving, and critically equalising, funding, regulation and support. With the cost of living continuing to rise, we would also recommend the government increases ‘thank you’ payments given to sponsors to better support them through the tough months ahead.”

Chair James Jamieson said the body hoped that “a number of Homes for Ukraine sponsors continue to house Ukrainian refugees with them”, adding: “We are talking to Government about how we might encourage that. For instance, increasing the thank you payment to a higher amount.”
