Three unions already have mandates for strike action on Lanarkshire, with further ballot papers having been issued earlier this week
Unions which are currently balloting thousands of Lanarkshire council staff over strikes in a pay dispute have welcomed news that local government employer Cosla is seeking new talks with the Scottish Government – but say they remain ready to take industrial action.

Unite industrial officer Graham McNab said: “Unite has been calling for discussions involving unions, the Scottish Government and Cosla for months now so we welcome all efforts that bring everyone together in order to find ways which can break through the current impasse. Unison had similarly called it “no better than what was already on the table” in a rejected 18-month settlement and noted that: “Council workers have seen the value of their wages reduced by a quarter over the past 14 years.”
“The offer of 3.2 per cent over 12 months is at the absolute limit of affordability for councils, given the extremely challenging financial situation local government is facing. We believe this above-inflation offer is fair, strong and credible.
