John Cowen appeared at Preston Crown Court
A trial date has been set for a former Countdown champion accused of stabbing a rival contestant at an event for former competitors in the Channel 4 game show.
The court heard that at 11.35am on September 14, 2024, emergency services were called reports of an assault in Hornby Road. Mr Carey was taken to hospital and Cowen was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and possession of a knife.Cowen, of Oxford Street, Morecambe, was remanded in custody and appeared in the dock at Preston Crown Court today . Judge Darren Preston set a date for him to return to court to stand trial on March 19, 2025.
He also scored the third highest total of the whole series, spotting the nine-letter word 'spreading'. He went on to compete in the Series 77 finals in December 2017, before going on to lose to Bradley Horrocks in semi-final. He lost again to Horrocks in the quarter-final of the Championship of Champions XV series in 2019.
