The council's leader has also pledged he will never raise council tax by more than the current limits
Nottinghamshire County Council has denied it is "on the edge of a financial meltdown" despite predictions that its budget gap over the coming years could be as high as £76 million. It comes as the council's leader says he will never raise council tax by more than the current limits amid speculation the government could scrap them.
As it begins preparing the budget for the next financial year, starting in April 2025, Nottinghamshire County Council's budget deficit over the coming years is now predicted to be between £58 million and £76 million. Inflation, inadequate funding from the government and huge demand for social care are among the major pressures on the council's budget.
"Their budget gaps continue to rise into the tens of millions and it's clear that urgent government intervention is needed. This time last year, the council forecast a £30 million gap in finances. "They do understand, and they're doing their very best to tackle it. But after 14 years of awful Tory government, they've got an awful lot to look at and consider. A responsible government, which is what a Labour government is now, has got to look at reform properly and carefully."
"When it gets to the danger of the really well managed ones such as ourselves on the edge - the system and funding for local government overall is not sufficient." County council leaders say that their priority will always be to try and deliver services in a different way, rather than stopping them altogether due to budget issues.
