The county accepted the federal money in a 4-1 vote Tuesday and hopes to select an operator for the center in July to serve migrants arriving in San Diego

The county Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to accept $19.6 million in federal funding to establish a transition day center to assist recently arrived migrants. “San Diego County is setting a national standard for expediting the asylum process, reducing street releases, and ensuring that asylum seekers are treated with the utmost dignity as they seek safety and a brighter future,” said Chairwoman Nora Vargas in a statement.

Insights focused on leveraging resources, avoiding duplication, and best practices for providing essential services to migrants while prioritizing onward travel, Barbara Jiménez, community operations officer with the county’s Department of Homeless Solutions and Equitable Communities, said during Tuesday's board meeting. Additional recommendations included providing multilingual, trauma-informed and culturally responsive services to migrants, Jiménez said.
