Unverified videos across social media showed soldiers and armoured vehicles gathering in Murillo Square in the centre of the capital of La Paz on Wednesday. Former President Evo Morales warned a “coup” was taking place in the capital spearheaded by general Juan Jose Zuniga, theLuis Arce, the country’s current president, denounced what he called “irregular” troop movements as he called for democracy to be respected.A soldier in an armored vehicle is deployed outside the Quemado Palace at Plaza de Armas in La Paz on June 26, 2024.

Mr Morales added: “A group of the Challapata Special Regiment ‘Mendez Arcos’ took over Plaza Murillo with snipers.“I ask democratically-minded people to defend the homeland from certain military groups that act against democracy and the people.”
