A couple traveling from Belfast Grand Central to Newry experienced a frustrating situation when they were denied access to their train due to arriving just seconds after the boarding cutoff time.

A couple planning to travel from Belfast Grand Central to Newry on Sunday evening were left furious after being refused access to their train before departure. The passengers were reportedly told they should have been on board two minutes prior to the train's departure. As a result, a group of about eight people, including several elderly individuals, were denied entry by a staff member and forced to watch as the train left.

The frustrated man, who wished to remain anonymous, explained to Belfast Live that he was unfamiliar with the station and they were attempting to navigate to the platform. He argued that there was no clear indication of this two-minute boarding policy, stating that in other major cities, doors typically close at the scheduled departure time. He insisted they were not significantly late, arriving just 15 seconds after the train's departure. The couple was then left stranded for two hours waiting for the next service to Newry. They had checked the Translink website and found no mention of this two-minute rule. When contacted, Translink confirmed that this policy is not new and reiterated that boarding closes two minutes before departure, as stated in the timetable notes.
