Stephen O’Donnell, 38, and Rachel Foster, 39, were sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for 12 months, for letting their dog starve to death in their overgrown garden. The couple were also banned from keeping animals for 20 years.
Last week, the ECHO reported on the heartbreaking case of 22 month old Zeus, who was found dead in the garden of a house on the East Lancashire Road in July last year. ECHO readers were horrified by the cruelty shown to the young mastiff in the months before his death.
Animal Rescue Officer Hannah Yen was first on the scene following a report about an underweight, collapsed dog in the garden. The garden was heavily overgrown but the officer could see a dog’s body lying on the floor of a wooden kennel. Zeus was unresponsive to any noises she made. The rescue officer passed the case over to RSPCA Inspector Caren Goodman-James who investigated and found that Zeus had been left unattended without food or water, which had resulted in his death.
