Health bosses are reporting Covid is 'once again spreading through our communities'

Health bosses are reporting Covid is "once again spreading through our communities" as two new sub-variants of Omicron prove a cause for concern. The sudden rise, by more than 30% in a week in Nottingham city, has prompted some relaxed rules to be reintroduced in some county hospitals.

Health experts have put this sudden rise down to a number of sub-variants of Omicron. The UKHSA says there are two "variants of concern" driving cases and these are known as BA.4 and BA.5. "We are seeing rising cases in our hospitals again and protecting our staff and patients from the virus is a very high priority for us. Therefore, like the rest of the country, we are asking the public to wear masks and take precautions before entering our hospitals, GP surgeries and other healthcare locations.

Due to the rising numbers of cases in the community some hospitals have made it mandatory to wear facemasks on site again. Patients, visitors and employees at King’s Mill Hospital, Newark Hospital and Mansfield Community Hospital, which fall under the Sherwood Forest Hospitals trust, were again being asked to wear masks from the end of June.

The rules were relaxed just two weeks prior at Sherwood.. Jonathan Gribbin, director of public health for the county, added: "The increase in rates is a reminder that Covid-19 hasn’t gone away. In view of this, a number of hospitals have reintroduced face coverings on their premises to protect their staff and patients. We can all follow simple steps to help protect ourselves and others.
