The doubling rate of Omicron variant 'now down to less than two days' in some regions PM Boris Johnson says 'we're also seeing the inevitable increase in hospitalisations - up 10% nationally week on week'
About 250 jabs per hour - that’s the rate staff are working at in the NHS Sheffield Vaccination Centre today., they’ve seen demand for boosters double - with around 10,000 appointments booked at their centre alone.
To avoid people having to crowd together in queues, as we saw elsewhere earlier in the week, here they’re widely spaced out, snaking around the building and through a lengthy maze of barriers. Soon after doors opened, I spoke to a few people in their 20s - only eligible for the booster since Monday - who said the need to safely meet their families at Christmas was their main reason for rushing out to get the jab.The nurse director of the programme, Jo Marsden, told me they put the call out to their team on Sunday night about needing to ramp up the vaccination and volunteer effort - and everyone stepped up.
She talked of a positive community spirit among the staff - rallying together to keep the centre administering jabs from first thing until 10pm, seven days a week. They want to do their bit to reach the target of every single adult in England being offered the booster by the end of this month.
