Two women reported coyote attacks in Montgomery County on Thursday, officials said.

The coyote that was killed in Montgomery County Thursday after attacking two women had rabies, the county health department said. The department asked people who may have come in contact with the coyote to check with their primary care physician to discuss the type of contact “and any further actions or treatments that may be needed.”

Hours later in Burtonsville, a second woman reported that she fought off a coyote and managed to stab the animal during an attack in the 3600 block of Bell Road about 3:45 p.m., officials said.In a Twitter message on Thursday the county police said the coyote was later located on a trail near Dustin Road and was fatally shot.

It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. In the United States, rabies is mostly found in wild animals like bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes, the CDC said. But coyotes have also been described by other authorities as possible carriers.
