Craig-y-Don, a village in Conwy, Wales, is rapidly emerging as a vibrant destination known for its diverse dining and shopping scene. Nestled beside the North Shore, it offers a charming blend of international cuisine, unique shops, and a strong sense of community.
During a recent visit to the increasingly popular village of Craig-y-Don in Conwy, I was struck by its cosmopolitan charm. The village is gradually stepping out from the shadow of neighbouring Llandudno and establishing itself as an attractive destination for dining and shopping. Nestled away next to the sea, it boasts the stunning North Shore right on its doorstep.
Eager to explore, I took a leisurely stroll along the Prom, admiring the sun-kissed slopes of the Little Orme on a sunny afternoon. Venturing into the village, I discovered a truly international array of cafes and independent shops. From Carmen's Asian Mini Market to Rousta's Greek restaurant and takeaway, Sylhet Spice Indian restaurant, and Casa Reme Delicatessen and Coffee Vino, there's a wealth of options for those feeling peckish or parched. The independent shops are also worth exploring. I popped into Carmen's Asian Mini Market, which offers Chinese, Thai, Filipino and Malay food. Shopkeeper Andy Boddis revealed that Carmen is his wife, whose full name is Yue Ming and hails from Shenzen, China. Their store is adorned with Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling and shelves laden with bags of rice, packs of smoked paprika and Gormeh Salzi (a Persian beef stew with dried limes, fenugreek and fresh herbs), reports North Wales Live. Andy shared: 'Customers used to go to Liverpool or Manchester for their Asian food. Now they come here - it saves them time.' He added: 'Rather than have a takeaway, people are cooking Asian food themselves. You know exactly what the ingredients are and there are recipes on YouTube.'With a newfound appreciation for Asian cuisine, I decided to explore other businesses in the village. Queen's Road is home to an array of intriguing establishments. An antiques shop with curious items in its window (including a 'BROADMOOR CRIMINAL LUNATIC ASYLUM' sign), Benard's Gallery, The Little Shop of Hairdo's, and a quilting and haberdashery specialist named The Quilting Bee. Helen Wilson, the shopkeeper at The Quilting Bee, mentioned that her shop is gaining popularity. Her colleague Julie Roberts chimed in: 'Our customers come from the Llyn Peninsula, Wrexham, Chester and Shrewsbury.' She also noted that American tourists visiting North Wales make it a point to stop by. Ms Roberts described Craig-y-Don as a 'community hub now', highlighting the bustling sewing classes held upstairs, one of which is led by Debra, a finalist in the 2022 BBC series The Great British Sewing Bee. Back outside, I thought about how I could have visited the Cask and Apple craft beer bar or the Ascot Tapproom micropub if I had more time. Craig-y-Don has plenty to offer, including Queens Park, tennis courts, and even its own Kadampa Buddhist centre. This charming village is attracting more and more visitors
