The League One match between Crawley Town and Charlton Athletic was called off 20 minutes before kickoff because of heavy rain that left the Broadfield Stadium pitch unplayable.
Crawley's League One game against Charlton Athletic on New Year's Day was postponed just 20 minutes before kick-off because of a waterlogged pitch at the Broadfield Stadium. Rain had fallen throughout the day in West Sussex and referee Sunny Singh Gill inspected the pitch around 13:30 GMT, giving the groundstaff time to work on several areas of the playing surface before a second 14:15 GMT pitch inspection.
With rain continuing to fall, the officials eventually took the decision to postpone the match around 14:40 GMT, with both sets of fans already in the ground and teams having been announced. The ninth-placed Addicks were seeking to close a four-point gap to the play-off places while Town, managed by former Charlton keeper Rob Elliot, had started the day fourth-bottom, two points from safety. A statement from the Reds on social media said: 'Unfortunately, this afternoon's match against Charlton has been postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch at the Broadfield Stadium. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will be back in touch with more communication regarding tickets in due course.'All times UK. Tables are subject to change. Charlton’s last visit to Crawley Town came in the EFL Trophy in September 2023 – despite twice taking the lead, the Addicks eventually lost 4-3. Crawley Town haven’t lost their opening league match of any of the last eight calendar years (W6 D2) since they lost 3-0 to Portsmouth in 2016. Charlton Athletic have lost their opening league match in four of the last five years (W1), winning the other 3-1 against Portsmouth in 2023
