The Buddies gaffer hopes the show of hospitality will be repaid with an invite to use Portugal's plush Lisbon base in the summer
Cristiano Ronaldo may have stormed off in a Hampden huff but Stephen Robinson says the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was the perfect gentlemen on his visit to Paisley.
And the St Mirren gaffer is hoping his side’s show of hospitality to the Portugal legend will be repaid with an invite to use their guests’ plush Lisbon training base next summer. Buddies boss Robbo was proud to welcome Roberto Martinez’s star-studded squad to the SMISA Stadium earlier this week as they limbered up for Tuesday’s Nations League draw with Scotland.
Ronaldo was happy to sign autographs and pose for pics with club staff and the hundreds of fans who swarmed on the ground. But he wasn’t so chirpy 24 hours later as his side were held by Steve Clarke’s Scots, with the former Real Madrid and Manchester United ace storming down the tunnel at full-time.
Robinson, however, was overjoyed with the experience, especially after Martinez suggested he bring his squad to the Portuguese capital next summer. He said: “Ronaldo, along with the whole of the Portuguese FA, their staff, players, manager, were ultimate pros and very courteous. “They were really down-to-earth and gave us a lot of time. It’s nice they thought that St Mirren was suitable to come and train and they were complimentary about everything. Hopefully it builds a future relationship. We may be go there in the summer to use their facilities in Lisbon.”
