Brits planning to travel to the area are urged to contact their travel provider

Due to the ongoing wildfires in Portugal hundreds of tourists have been evacuated from their holidays in the southern part of the country. Since the incident began on Saturday, August 5, thousands of hectares of land has been destroyed in the area of Odemira in the Alentejo region.

The flames are being brought on amid high temperatures which have reached 40C and there are also strong winds in the area. Odemira's mayor, Helder Guerreiro, described the situation as "critical, difficult and complex" in an update on the disaster, reports The Daily Mirror.Satellite photos showed huge amounts of smoke billowing from the areas. It has been reported that at least four people, all believed to be firefighters, have been injured in the fires.

August is usually the hottest month of the year in Portugal. This fire follows the extreme weather in July which caused havoc across the planet and record temperatures in China, parts of southern Europe and the United States. Meanwhile, the Balearic Islands have issued red alerts due to the risk of wildfires for locals and tourists. Brits booking holidays should also check if their travel insurance will cover them if they choose to holiday somewhere which has been known to have wildfires.
