The birth of a critically endangered Bornean orangutan at Chester Zoo has been hailed as a 'positive step' for the protection of the highly threatened species.
Zookeepers have released the first images of mum Sarikei cradling the rare newborn and said the two are building close bonds. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature lists Bornean orangutans as critically endangered in the wild. It ranks them as one of the species which requires the highest conversation priority.has declined by nearly 90% since the 1970s, and that more than 2,000 are being hunted every year.
