Dozen people in camouflage gear targeted force’s car which was monitoring commemoration of 1916 Rising
A crowd has attacked police with petrol bombs and other missiles during a parade by dissident republicans in Derry on the eve of Joe Biden’s visit toA handful of youths and men who masked their faces targeted a police Land Rover that was monitoring the parade in the Creggan area of the city on Monday afternoon. The vehicle briefly caught fire and withdrew. There were no reported casualties.
Ch Supt Nigel Goddard said anyone participating in the parade would be committing a criminal offence because organisers had not obtained permission to march. Violence has erupted at previous Easter parades in Derry but police believe the international spotlight onThe attack on the police vehicle came shortly after Pope Francis lauded the 1998, which largely drew a line under the Troubles. “In a spirit of gratitude I pray to the God of peace so that what was achieved in that historic step can be consolidated to benefit all the men and women of the island of Ireland,” he said in his Easter Monday address at St Peter’s Square.
