Families gathered as the 50ft tree, with 14,000 LED lights, was switched on

Christmas has officially landed on Church Street as the city's huge tree was illuminated. The Lord Mayor Richard Kemp switched on the tree at 4.45pm on Thursday, November 21, in front of watching crowds. People clapped and cheered as the tree's 14,000 LED lights were switched on. The Rector of Liverpool, Crispin Pailing, blessed the nativity at the base of the tree. One woman was out Christmas shopping when she stumbled upon the light switch-on.

' Another woman rushed from Liverpool Central train station to see the twinkling lights illuminate the 50ft tree, but sadly arrived a few minutes too late. She told the ECHO: 'I missed it! But I think it's lovely. It's quite understated, but you don't need anything really special. It's just nice with the baubles and the lights on. 'They didn't have it for a few years, but I'm glad they've brought it back.
