The researchers were tasked with determining how — and if — the Northern Territory government's promise to offset all greenhouse gas emissions from fracking the Beetaloo Basin could be achieved.
The report does not estimate the potential cost of offsetting emissions from the basin, which is located 500 kilometres south-east of Darwin.
The authors also question "how else might we use Australian land-based offsets and CCS rather than abating the impact of onshore shale gas, which would otherwise maintain or add to cumulative greenhouse gas emissions."Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a controversial drilling technique that involves injecting chemicals and water deep into the ground at high pressure to force open rock formations and extract natural gas.
In a statement, GISERA director Dr Damien Barrett defended the report, saying the "CSIRO stands behind the quality of its research the integrity of its peer review process". "Carbon capture and storage is one of the only mitigation options available in harder-to-abate industries such as these," he said.
