Jennifer Merry carried out the acts between March and June 2020 while employed as a support worker at a care home in Ayr.

An Ayrshire care home worker who slapped a patient in the face and pulled the hair of another while they slept has been struck off.

The name of the care home has been redacted, although papers state it was run by Heathfield Care and Residential Homes Limited.According to the SSSC report Merry slapped a “challenging” resident, known only as ‘AA,’ in the face- after she was struck by the resident first. On another occasion Merry was said to have pulled the hair of a resident, known as ‘BB’ who was asleep and snoring in the lounge.

An extract from the SSSC report said: “Social service workers are expected to treat the vulnerable service users in their care with dignity and respect and protect them from harm. Your behaviour towards two residents was physically abusive and aggressive, risking physical harm and emotional harm. “It was a serious abuse of the trust placed in you to care for service users with compassion and raises serious concerns about your attitude to vulnerability.”

“If your conduct had not been reported, your employer would not have been able to properly and fully risk assess the incident for the benefit of AA and other residents. That would have placed all residents at an unknown and increased risk of harm.”
