Thousands of people have been protesting across the Canary Islands against tourism. Claims have been made it's not sustainable and has a damaging effect on the environment and locals lives.
The warning has been issues by the Cruise Lines International AssociationCruise liners may decide to boycott popular destinations in Spain, such as Mallorca and Ibiza, if anti-tourism protests and 'violent attitudes' towards holiday-makers continue to escalate.
What it could envisage, however, is a major change to the destinations cruise liners travel to, favoring 'tourist-friendly' locations.People attend an anti tourism protest under the motto 'Enough! Let's put limits on tourism' organized by different civil society groups in Barcelona earlier this month
They made an appeal for authorities to stop 'demonising' tourism and start to manage cities in a more efficient way.'The infrastructure is ready,' the association has indicated. 'All that is needed is for those responsible for the country's tourism promotion to offer foreigners to visit other attractive cities such as La Coruña, Ferrol, Almería, Alicante, Cartagena or Cádiz, where more and more ships dock.
Most of the protests have been peaceful but Barcelona has come under fire for demonstrations last week when tourists were sprayed with water and firecrackers were set off in hotel foyers, scenes described by the authorities as 'unacceptable'.
