Matheus Cunha's disciplinary record and a sincere apology, including an offer to replace the glasses of an Ipswich Town staff member, have helped him avoid a harsher punishment for an on-field altercation.
Matheus Cunha avoided a harsher punishment for his altercation with an Ipswich Town staff member by offering to buy them new glasses. The incident occurred after the full-time whistle on December 14, where Cunha appeared to elbow the staff member and remove their glasses. Initially, a three-match ban and a £120,000 fine were being considered. However, the disciplinary commission accepted Cunha's apology and his prompt offer to replace the glasses.
Cunha, who has a clean disciplinary record, cited feeling 'quite threatened' during the brawl involving 'a large number' of Ipswich personnel. The FA, though, stated that the commission did not find any provocation from Ipswich staff that would justify Cunha's actions. They also believe there was no reason for Cunha to grab the staff member's glasses, an act he now regrets. Cunha served the first match of his initial suspension on Monday in Wolves' 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest. He will also miss their FA Cup third round clash against Bristol City on Saturday. However, he can return for their Premier League match against Newcastle on January 17
