Curtis Jones was shown a first red card of his professional career for a tackle on Yves Bissouma
Liverpool were handed a major blow when Curtis Jones was sent off in the 26th minute against Tottenham Hotspur. Just weeks after Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister were sent off in separate games, the Reds once again had to play the majority of a match without the full compliment of players.
It got worse later on when Diogo Jota was dismissed for two bookable offences. Jones went over the ball into Bissouma’s ankle - but only after making contact with the ball in the first place. Simon Hooper originally gave Jones a yellow but after a VAR check, it was upgraded to red and Jones was sent on his way to give Liverpool another uphill battle.READ MORE: PGMOL admit Luis Diaz Liverpool goal should have stood in full VAR explanation The ECHO understands that the original decision was overturned due to the Liverpool midfielder's studs showing and making contact above the ankle - prompting an offence that officials judged to be serious foul play. Pending a possible appeal, the 22-year-old will now miss the next three matches against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest. Not even 10 minutes after the initial VAR decision overturned Jones' yellow card into a red, Luis Diaz was denied a goal after the flag went up straight away - and a rapid VAR check confirmed the decision, which replays suggested was very tight. In a shock twist, the PGMOL admitted that the goal should have been allowed citing that "significant human error" had occured. The Diaz strike would have handed the Reds the lead but minutes later, Heung-min Son went down the other end and opened the scoring. Liverpool were minutes away from a famous performance after seeing their numerical disadvantage worsen when substitute Jota was too sent off, after Cody Gakpo's equaliser but Joel Matip inadvertently turned in Pedro Porro's opener.
