The latest Beyond the Dream documentary shines a light on a Paralympian canoeist, who admits “I don’t give up easily”.
The late disability activist Stella Young was outspoken on the scourge of “inspiration porn” – the tendency of the media to tell disabled people’s stories in a way that celebrated them as “special” simply for doing the same things that able-bodied people did.
McGrath was a combat engineer in Afghanistan when in 2012 he had both of his legs blown off by an improvised explosive device. A bare four years after this cataclysmic event, he won gold in the KL2 canoe race at the Rio Paralympics. He repeated the feat at the Tokyo Paralympics, and added the VL2 canoe sprint for good measure. He’ll be defending his titles at the upcoming Paris Games.What really stands out about Curtis McGrath in this program is just how down to earth he is.
