“To me, a company of this size, this magnitude, they should have the structures in place to handle this type of situation. It’s predicable. This is just offensive at this point.”
PG&E crews use a giant crane to secure a broken utility pole at the corner of Ygnacio Valley Road and Homestead Avenue in Walnut Creek, Calif., on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024. A large tree toppled over because of the high winds last night causing several utility poles to break and closing down Ygnacio Valley Road. The work of replacing the poles is estimated to be completed some time around 10 pm to midnight tonight.
“This is really beyond the pale,” said McLaughlin, 38, who lives in the Santa Teresa area of Blossom Valley. “To me, a company of this size, this magnitude, they should have the structures in place to handle this type of situation. It’s predictable. This is just offensive at this point.” Jeff Smith, a PG&E spokesman, expressed his apologies Wednesday to residents still left without power and blamed the lingering outages on a storm that packed an unusual punch for the Bay Area. The storm damaged 2,075 conductors and forced the replacement of 728 poles across its system, he said. Another 357 cross arms needed to be replaced, as did 247 transformers.
A closure sign at an entrance to California State University East Bay on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024, in Hayward, Calif. The campus has been shutdown since Monday due to power problems. “It’s just ridiculous,” said Devora Bratton, 73, a five-decade resident of La Honda. She questioned the utility provider’s commitment to rural areas — arguing that “they charge us a lot of money for electricity. So I do wish they showed concern for the small communities a little more.”
To the south, Boulder Creek also largely remained without power Wednesday. It ranked among the largest problem spots in Santa Cruz County, where more than 10,000 customers were without power as of 1:15 p.m.
