Wales Online reporter Steffan Rhys reveals how eliminating ultra-processed foods from his diet led to significant weight loss and improved well-being. He shares his experience, explaining the impact of UPF on health and offering practical tips for making similar dietary changes.
It's incredible what making the smallest of diet changes can do for your physical and mental wellbeing.
What is ultra-processed food? Ultra-processed foods are those which contain high levels of chemical, synthetic or industrial ingredients. They have probably also undergone industrial processes like hydrogenation and moulding, and contain additives like dyes, stabilisers, flavour enhancers or emulsifiers. They very often also have high levels of unhealthy fats, sugars and salt.
Instead of crisps on the side of a meal or as a snack, eat nuts straight from the bag, make your own hummus or crispy chickpeas . You can then keep them in tubs or pots as go-to snacks. What have I stopped eating? UPF creeps into so much of what we eat, including those foods which make bold health claims like "low fat" or "low sugar" on the packet. Some of the foods I stopped eating are obvious, like crisps and milk chocolate bars. Other things are less obvious, like fruit-flavoured yoghurts and granola.
