Three Cuyahoga County Council members are seeking to terminate a 2017 agreement between the city and county that allows Cleveland police inmates to be housed at the county jail.
Cuyahoga County, in 2017, agreed to start housing those arrested by Cleveland police at the county jail in downtown Cleveland for a rate of $99 per inmate per day. As costs have increased, though, some councilmembers feel Cleveland is no longer paying a fair share. CLEVELAND , Ohio – Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne is negotiating with the city of Cleveland to resolve financial issues related to the rising costs of housing the city’s inmates in the county jail.
In a recent letter to county Prosecutor Michael O’Malley, councilmembers Jones, Sunny Simon, and Michael Gallagher accused Cleveland of “repeatedly and flagrantly” breaching a seven-year agreement to consolidate jail services. They urged O’Malley to terminate or void the contract, describing it as “dysfunctional...untenable and detrimental to Cuyahoga County and its residents.”
