A cyclist who suffered serious injuries after a collision with an uninsured SUV driver has confronted the motorist at her home demanding compensation for damages to his bike. The incident occurred on New Year's Day in Auckland, New Zealand, when the cyclist, a road safety engineer, was riding with a group of four.
Mele Kauvalu, a 68-year-old retired pharmaceutical factory worker, allegedly pulled out of a parking space without indicating, causing the cyclist to slam on his brakes and lose control of his bike. He flew over the handlebars and landed on his head, narrowly avoiding a broken neck. Kauvalu initially claimed that the cyclist had bumped into her car, but video footage of the incident clearly shows her failing to indicate before pulling out. The cyclist, who wishes to remain anonymous, sustained heavy bruises, cuts, and shock from the crash, forcing him to take a week off work. He is seeking $12,805 in damages to repair his custom-built bike, which sustained significant damage to its frame, wheels, and crankset. He has lodged a Disputes’ Tribunal claim, and the police are also investigating the incident, including Kauvalu's decision to leave the scene without contacting the cyclists. The cyclist believes he is 100% entitled to compensation as Kauvalu was entirely at fault for the crash.
