Ray McCauley works long days a long way from home

Ray McCauley began life on the North Sea rigs aged 22 as a scaffolder, which "is a high-risk job". His current role is more supervisory, as the focal point, but dangers remain.

"A typical day for me would be a 5am start. I need to wake up first, coffee, smoke, news, and some food. I would then go to the office for 6am, see if there were any jobs that might have come in from night shift teams that require scaffolding or fabric maintenance. There’s supervision as part of Ray’s role and he’s involved in the emergency response helideck team; carrying out any crew change or medivac flights as required. Also, working the crane, on deck, locating materials to work sites and supply-boat operations as they need to transport their requirements by sea and offload them to their own decks.

Typical work patterns are two weeks on and two weeks off. Differing installations are fixed platforms pinned to the seabed, which are much more stable or semi-submersible; a rig that can be moved to different locations and then anchored, but has a lot more movement. FPSO boats are mainly converted oil tankers and are used for production, storage and offloading of hydrocarbons, which are highly combustible and the main energy source of the world. Hydrocarbons include gas, oil, diesel to name a few.
