The Dallas Charter Review Commission rejects proposals to move city elections from May to November.
The Charter Review Commission opts for status quo with recommendations that would keep municipal elections in May.
One of the members against moving Dallas elections was Adam McGough, a former City Council member who used to be Rawlings’ chief of staff.“Going to November is not going to solve the problems,” McGough said at a February meeting of the commission. “There’s apathy. That is the issue.”“It’s really hard to convince the beneficiary of a broken system to do something to fix the broken system,” he toldDallas has been grappling with low voter turnout for decades.
Advocates of improving voter participation were hopeful that the Dallas Charter Review Commission, which meets every 10 years, would develop proposals that would help elected leaders better engage with voters and, perhaps, make voting easier.Commission members rejected moving Dallas elections to November for a mix of stated reasons, including fear of partisan politics sullying nonpartisan elections, the elusive pursuit of other alternatives and a nostalgia for the status quo.
Still, some commission members didn’t think moving the election date was necessary. They offered other suggestions, including billboards reminding people to vote and more candidate forums.
