Government exists to perform tasks that the private market cannot — from providing public safety to paving streets.

And here we go again with a plan to install some 150 8.5-foot-tall, 3-foot-wide digital advertising signs in the public rights of way in the central city. These new digital advertising signs would take up precious space that is better devoted to pedestrians, a tree or really anything else.The signs have been opposed by every major interest group in Uptown and downtown. They are an intrusive and unnecessary noisemaker in the public space.
