Gyles Brandreth has led heartfelt tributes to the iconic Dame Maggie Smith following her death at the age of 89. The celebrated actress, renowned for her roles in classics like Hook and Sister Act, and more recently the Harry Potter franchise and Downton Abbey , was remembered by her "devastated" sons who honoured their "extraordinary mother". In a statement, they shared that she died peacefully in hospital with her loved ones by her side.
Tributes have now poured in for the acting icon, with This Morning regular Gyles Brandreth describing her passing as "the end of a golden era", reports the Mirror. Hugh Bonneville, who played the son of Dame Maggie's character Robert Crawley, paid tribute to her as a "true legend of her generation". He wrote: “Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent. She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances. My condolences to her boys and wider family.
The actors starred together in Sister Act, where Dame Maggie played Reverend Mother Superior while Goldberg portrayed Deloris Van Cartier. The US actress shared an old picture of the two on set of Sister Act, dressed as nuns, on Instagram and described her as a “great woman”. "I had the unforgettable experience of working with her; sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion. She could eat anyone alive, and often did. But funny, and great company. And suffered no fools. We will never see another. God speed, Ms. Smith!"
