The Grenfell Tower fire was a “culmination of decades of failure” by central government and those in positions of responsibility in the construction industry, the final report in to the disaster has found.
The long-awaited conclusion of the inquiry in to the disaster, which claimed the lives of 72 people in June 2017, has found there was a “complacent and defensive attitude to fire safety” within Government, with ministers repeatedly failing to act on warnings about the dangers of the flammable cladding.
A cladding subcontractor, Harley, was also said to bear a significant degree of responsibility, with the panel finding Harley “appears to have thought there was no need to consider fire safety because others would do so”. The surveyor responsible for the refurbishment was also found to have been “overworked and inadequately trained.” Amongst the report’s key recommendations were that:The government should bring responsibility for fire safety in to one department under one Secretary of State.
