The 24-year-old Sunderland defender is ready to shoulder more responsibility with Northern Ireland
Dan Ballard insists he is ready to shoulder more responsibility with Northern Ireland, but don't be expecting any ranting or raving in the changing room.
Ballard captained Northern Ireland in the summer friendly win over Andorra, an experience he "thoroughly enjoyed"."I think both Jonny and Davo, the two captains I have played under, were both very similar. Both were very vocal on the pitch and demanding, and they led by example," Ballard said. "I feel that is natural with my career in general. I do take on more responsibility, not just here but at Sunderland as well. I am used to playing in quite a young team with my club, so coming here I feel normal."The team has played probably 10 games recently without Jonny. He was always a massive boost when he was here, and he isn't someone who can be replaced.
Leadership is something people can be born with, while others learn to adapt within a team environment."I don't know. Maybe for defenders, you sort of have that naturally," he said. "I love playing for Northern Ireland. Some of my best memories are coming away with the team," he said.
