Dan Tehan calls out Andrew Giles for ‘hiding behind’ bodies rather than ‘owning his decisions’
Shadow Immigration Minister Dan Tehan has called out Immigration Minister Andrew Giles for doing “everything he can” to “hide behind” bodies and decision-makers rather than owning his decisions. This means that the government will not have to release up to 170 asylum seekers from detention whose lack of cooperation is a factor in why they can’t be deported.
“We were very pleased for the government that the High Court made the decision it did today – it was what was being expected,” Mr Tehan said during a media conference on Friday. “But what we are deeply, deeply concerned about, still, is their response to the previous High Court decision which led to, now, we know, 153 hardened criminals being released into the community – includes seven murderers, 37 sex offenders. It includes hardened criminals.
“And yet what we’ve found out of those 153 – what we’ve found out today – under the cover of this new High Court decision, is the government is monitoring less than half of them, even though the Minister made it quite clear months ago that he wanted to know where all of them were. “The Minister is doing everything he can to hide behind bodies and decision-makers, rather than fronting up and owning these decisions and owning his statement that he wants to keep the Australian community safe.”
