He has become 'institutionalised'

A knife-wielding robber who says he has become "institutionalised" after being in and out of prison since he was 15 is back behind bars.

On April 2, at around 2pm, a couple observed Templeton looking into their garden. Ms Edwards said when he was confronted he claimed he was looking at their garden furniture as he wanted some for himself. However, CCTV cameras captured him peering through a window and trying their door handle. Templeton was identified and was arrested for that and some subsequent shop thefts on April 12 and 13 where he stole bottles of wine.

Ms Edwards told the court: "He [Templeton] approached him and gabbed him with both hands. He dragged him to the far side of the counter and told him to 'open the f****** till now or I'll take your f****** life.; The man saw a knife and he [Templeton] pointed it to his stomach and back making stabbing actions demanding the till be opened. He put the knife to his throat and said 'now quickly.

Templeton was identified by his voice and another staff member who knew his surname. The court heard the knife he had taken with him was a 15cm kitchen knife. Ms Edwards said: "The store had to close for the rest of the day and lost around £5,000 in takings. He was arrested from his home address on the 15th of May and interviewed but made no comment."

The court heard Templeton had 53 previous convictions for 109 offences on his record including for crimes such as robbery, theft and aggravated vehicle taking. Mitigating, Stuart Field, told the court he "has an extensive record" and said he had described himself as "institutionalised."
