A look at the creation of Daniel Blumberg's score for Brady Corbet's epic film, 'The Monument', exploring the challenges and inspirations behind its multi-genre, multi-decade journey.

Brady Corbet 's monumental epic, a sprawling 215-minute exploration of a Holocaust survivor turned Hungarian architect navigating the post-war American century, posed a unique challenge for composer Daniel Blumberg .

How could one craft a score befitting such grandeur, reaching the heights of Corbet's ambition and the star-studded performances of Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce? Blumberg, known for his work in British indie rock and the avant-garde music scene, approached the task with characteristic boldness. As László Tóth, Brody's disoriented refugee, arrives in New York harbor, Blumberg's alt-classical score explodes with a sonorous blast of brass, setting the stage for a multi-decade, multi-genre journey. From the 1940s to the 1980s, Blumberg's music traverses the Atlantic, moving from industrial Pennsylvania to the marble quarries of Carrera, Italy, reflecting László's own odyssey. Blumberg's personal, DIY, east London take on music bleeds into the score, creating a tapestry as rich and multifaceted as the film itself. This ambitious undertaking, culminating in a BAFTA nomination for Blumberg alongside eight other nominations for the film, began with a simple instinct. 'From when I first read the script, it was the most important project I've ever done,' says Blumberg. The script's brilliance and his close friendship with Corbet fueled his commitment. Blumberg's involvement extended beyond the initial four-minute score segment shot in 2020. He immersed himself in the film's world, spending time on set in Budapest, even sleeping in a tiny room in Corbet's apartment. One pivotal scene, set in a jazz club, demanded a live jazz band, playing Blumberg's freshly composed score. The challenge lay in finding the right musicians, a task made more daunting by the film's demanding schedule. Blumberg knew he needed to create a theme that would resonate throughout the film, a sonic blueprint for László's journey. The scene at the Carrera marble quarries presented a different challenge. Blumberg envisioned a site-specific recording of saxophonist Evan Parker, the legendary free improvisation maestro. However, Parker's busy touring schedule posed a hurdle
