Daniel Ricciardo is BACK. Ricciardo will make his racing return to Formula One in Hungary, replacing Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri. He will be on loan from Red Bull Racing, eight months after his last start for McLaren.
. He said the “signs were pointing” toward wanting an F1 comeback, encouraged by the progress he was making in the simulator with Red Bull.Red Bull has done little to hide its disappointment in de Vries, who joined AlphaTauri with an impressive CV including titles in both Formula 2 and Formula E. Yet his failure to match teammate Yuki Tsunoda’s level of performance or score any points meant rumors about his future arose as early as Monaco in May.
These came around the same time Ricciardo had a seat fitting with AlphaTauri, intended to give the team an extra alternative reserve driver in case de Vries or Tsunoda were unavailable for a race. The expectation was never for Ricciardo to race for AlphaTauri. In Austria, new team CEO Peter Bayer outlined the purpose of the team was to help the next generation of young Red Bull drivers, a mold Ricciardo does not fit at the age of 34. But team principal Franz Tost said performance would be the deciding factor on who would race for AlphaTauri next year, and also noted the lack of top young drivers coming through who could race for the team.
With Red Bull’s patience in de Vries finally running out, the path emerged for Ricciardo’s shock return. He’s a known, quick quantity that can bring a boost to AlphaTauri amid its slump to the foot of the constructors’ championship this year. The performance of the car means Ricciardo is unlikely to be fighting at the front, but returning to the grid puts him on the path to one day land a top seat again.
