DARPA is looking to develop a lunar economy by 2035. Six technologies have been identified to facilitate resource utilization.

Last year, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announced a new study called Luna-10 that would investigate how to develop a thriving lunar economy by 2035., including Northrop Grumman and SpaceX. Together, the agency and the companies are investigating a communications network that could enable a lunar economy based on lunar resources and scientific research.

Based on those findings, DARPA has also issued a “Request for Information” for new technological capabilities. DARPA’s In it, the agency highlighted the need for technologies related to central heating and cooling, lunar prospecting, silicon wafer manufacturing, biomanufacturing, low gravity refinement concepts, and new lunar navigation concepts.

“In this new paradigm, users would bring only the minimal thermal equipment to the Moon, plug into a thermal hub, and pay for heat generated/rejected on a dollars-per-kilowatt basis – analogous to power utilities on Earth and a foundational enabler to the lunar economy,” the paper explained. Furthermore, there are advantages to manufacturing silicon wafers on the Moon. The crystals used for these wafers, which are required for supercomputers, have been shown to grow much faster aboard the International Space Station.
