Sonia McCann was just seven years old when the body of her mother Wilma was found in 1975.
The creator of new drama The Long Shadow has told how the eldest daughter of Peter Sutcliffe’s Scottish victim inspired his version of the true-crime story.
Writer George Kay said the words Sonia spoke in an interview she gave two years before her death perfectly sum up his drama which gives a unique telling of the horror and heartache caused by one of Britain’s most high profile killers. “This is what our show, The Long Shadow, encapsulates. In my view, thirty-two years after he first killed, Sonia became Peter Sutcliffe’s final victim.
Wilma McCann was just 28 when she was found dead near the council estate where she lived. She had been attacked with a hammer and stabbed 15 times. Later that day police arrived and took the youngsters to a nearby children’s home where they were told their mother had died, but given little detail about her death. It was years later before they discovered the bundle they had believed to be a Guy Fawkes was actually their mother’s body.
Richard, who got married on the Isle of Skye and named his daughters Skye and Isla in honour of his mum’s island roots, said: “I had a kind and loving mother. Our lives were turned upside down by what happened. She died the week before my sixth birthday. At that age you don’t process that.
