Filmed over the course of eight years and revolving around the first of these dances in Washington DC, Daughters charts the lives of four families leading up to this event and its aftermath — examining questions of healing, forgiveness, connection and community.Daughters is a tear-jerker from the outset.
"We often silence young girls and don't even think about the children who are impacted by the criminal justice system," Patton told Elle.Standing by them are their mothers. Even though Daughters focuses on the relationship between fathers and daughters, the mothers are no bit players. The Date with Dad program empowers them to find a community with other single mothers and acknowledge their collective strength and resilience.
"The fathers start to have … their own aha moment about their role and responsibility of just showing up," Patton told NPR.
