Imagine taking an Uber home at 14 years old only to realize that the driver is headed in the wrong direction.
This unsettling experience became all too real for one Dauphin County Technical School student who said her Uber driver told her he was headed toward his house instead."We got closer toward the hill from Walmart, and he decided to stop and turn around and go toward the city, but that’s the opposite direction," she said."He mentioned that he lived uptown, and I was just like, okay," she said.
"When I knew I had to get out I was kind of panicking," she said, "but at the same time, I knew I was in a serious situation, so I had to think quickly and get out.", a student at the University of South Carolina was murdered after getting into the wrong Uber. This tragedy pushed Josephson's parents to advocate for legislation to make ride-share services safer. SAMI's law—which stands for stop, ask, match, and inform—was signed by President Joe Biden in January of last year. It aims to address safety requirements for passengers and drivers using ride-sharing apps—something the 14-year-old tells CBS 21 her driver failed to do.
"So we know that it is very bad," Josephson said. "It's drastically changing, it's increasing, it's still happening to this day."
