Top awards in Pennsylvania's Sommelier Judgment were handed out to Binah, Inn at Grace and Penns Woods in eastern Pa. and Armstrong Valley, located in Halifax in central Pa.

Pennsylvania's Sommelier Judgment winners included three from the eastern part of the state and one from a winery north of Harrisburg.Pennsylvania conducts several contests throughout the year, and one that has been gaining prominence with each passing year is the Sommelier Judgment, held in the spring.

All wines were scored based on appearance, aroma & bouquet, taste & texture, after taste, and overall impression, according to a release sent out by the competition. Judges tasted wines blind, but were told of the varietal, vintage and grape varietals used for each wine. The winery name, bottle price and growing region were not disclosed to the judges.

Scott Zoccollilo, director of Restaurants Method Co., has been the primary contributor to this event since its inception. He said, “The 2024 PA Somm Judgement was the best so far. Having so many new faces take part of the event, all excited to see what Pennsylvania producers are offering was very motivating. The quality of the wines being produced in Pennsylvania continues to increase, and their wines stand side by side with any growing region, both domestically and abroad.

The Top 10 wines in this years Sommelier Judgment competition represent a diverse list of varietals from wineries across the state, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Chambourcin, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
