Editor Note: HOT ROD is celebrating the 20th running of Drag Week by looking back in the event’s history books. One of the most prestigious honors is to be inducted into theand most will agree that the year 2012 was a pivotal one. The top players at the time, Jeff Lutz and Larry Larson, were going head-to-head with a couple of classic Chevys and knocking on the 6-second door.
The swoopy Camaro was armed with a twin-turbo small-block Chevy engine from famed engine builder Ken Duttweiler. The engine checked in at a mere 414ci, tiny when compared to the 565ci combinations from competitors like Larson and Tom Bailey, and the rather robust 632ci powerplant in. Despite a lack of displacement, the Duttweiler combination is a well-proven one in both drag racing and land speed competitions.
It would take two more days of racing to accomplish the first part for the club entry. Ahokas was back in 6-second form and rocketed a 6.89 at 204.85 on Day 3 at World Wide Technology Raceway, located just outside of St. Louis. He ran 6.88 at 204.32 on the fourth day in Memphis, proving the car’s capabilities but trailed Bailey and his Sick Seconds 1.0 Camaro.
