Woody Woodmansey was the drummer in the Spiders From Mars, the band that backed David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust era.

The drummer who played with David Bowie during his glam rock era has opened up about a historic gig in Glasgow where he realised their innovative style was striking a chord with music lovers. Woody Woodmansey, 74, was one of the Spiders From Mars, the band who backed David Bowie while he performed as alter-ego Ziggy Stardust.

Speaking in 2019, ahead of a concert in the city, Woody said: "That was a great gig. I totally remember it, mainly because it had the reputation of being the place where if they like you, they love you and you will have a great night. If they don't, get out of town quick, basically. "This guy just came up and said something neither of us caught. Mike just whispered to me, 'Do they like it?' I couldn't tell whether he was going to beat the s*** out of us or if he loved it - the phrasing was just coming at us at 100mph. But then he shook my hand and I said, 'Yeah, I think he liked it.'"

"He said thanks for ringing and then we realised it was his birthday. We hadn't planned it but we played a bad karaoke version of Happy Birthday with the audience and we held the phone up. The band considered quitting the tour but took inspiration from Bowie, who had worked right up until the end. When they played, they discovered they were helping fans to come to terms with his passing.
