'Neither Labour or the Tories show up for Scotland in the chamber, in their manifestos or in their sporadic visits north of the border' | DavidLinden ✍️
As I stood in the Commons chamber, my SNP colleagues lining the green benches behind me, something odd stood out to me about the debate. Other than our section of the chamber, it was exceptionally empty. Debates in the chamber tend to vary on their popularity and, frankly, even important debates can attract a low attendance rate.
It seems like an unlikely possibility that only SNP MPs are concerned with this crisis and that it has evaded the other major parties in Westminster. Whilst the mandatory Tory Government Ministers and Labour shadow spokespeople took their place on the front benches opposite each other, I couldn’t help but think that the politicians on each side of the despatch box were interchangeable. The closer we get to aand the closer that Keir Starmer believes he is to Number 10 Downing Street, it seems the more right wing the Labour Party sounds.
Across Scotland, people have seen job centres close, food banks open in huge numbers, their refugee neighbours deported under the hostile environment, their benefits taken away under the draconian rules of work capability assessments, the financial hardship that has resulted from Brexit – all under Tory rule in Westminster. After 13 years in Government, the Tories’ record is shameful – which makes it doubly horrifying that the Labour leader would consider this a suitable model to mimic.
