The government had previously said gyms would be some of the last places to open
lockdown on Sunday evening. It is understood that gyms and leisure centres may be shut until the autumn over fears they are a ‘hotbed of infection’.

DLL operates 100 clubs across the UK, which Mr Earlham said were ready to reopen ‘within weeks’. Explaining how this could be done safely, he said the whole team would be given PPE and asked to wipe down door handles and surfaces if given the green-light to open up. ‘We’d also be in the position to reopen outdoor swimming pools – all the advice suggests chlorine kills Covid stone dead.
